Celebrating Larry Ballonoff
With heavy hearts we share that Larry Bruce Ballonoff, M.D., died on January 28, 2023, at age 80, from progressive heart failure. He lived just as he died - on his own terms with dignity, strength, grace, love, and courage - surrounded by his loving family.
Larry was an influential husband, father, grandfather, uncle, physician and friend. The number of people who called and visited in his final weeks was a true testament to the wonderful energy he put out into the world. Larry had an infectious laugh. Dogs revered him and babies found solace in his strong hands and consoling arms. Larry was the person many of us called for help, medical insights, child care, dog sitting, support, or just love. He adored music - making it and listening to it - and was often drumming on whatever was close at hand. He was a delightful balance of silly, fun, flexible and firm. He could often be found sitting on the floor with his grandchildren, dressed in a fancy tiara, petting the dogs with one hand and playing cars with the other, simultaneously explaining how life isn't fair and someone always gets the bigger piece of chocolate.
Larry was an adventurer at heart and loved the outdoors. Whether it was a bike ride, a road trip, or a transcontinental adventure, he was always game. He ignited a passion for travel and adventure in his family. During his retirement he visited Thailand, China, Bali, Laos, Greece, and Italy. During his adventures, he also paid close attention to ways that he could be of service to others in the world. The personal and professional relationships he forged through his travels grew into lasting sponsorships to support individuals' educational and professional development.
Larry was a passionate doctor who believed in prevention, teamwork, and putting people first. He loved his team in the Endocrinology Department at Kaiser Permanente CO and volunteered at the Caritas Clinic providing care to the uninsured. A teacher at heart, he also provided support and mentorship to countless trainees.
The night before he passed, we had dinner on the beach and watched his final sunset as dolphins splashed in the surf. A hummingbird appeared outside the window just after he left us. The day after he passed, we took a walk on the beach and a seal followed us in the breaking waves. The next morning, after an night filled with rain, a glorious, full rainbow arched across the sky. His absence is profound and he is clearly always with us. The bright light that shined from his beautiful blue eyes now lives forever within our hearts.
